01 / WHERE IT BEGAN
It began with
a problem.
Before Dr L J Biotec, our founder was simply trying to find skincare that addressed what he wanted from a routine.
The UK offered an enormous selection, but navigating it could be difficult. What did each ingredient actually do? Which products were intended for dull-looking skin, blemishes or the visible signs of ageing? And how should those products fit together?
Then Japan changed the perspective.

A DIFFERENT SKINCARE LANDSCAPE

While completing a master's degree at Keio University in Japan, the founder encountered a skincare landscape that often approached familiar concerns in unfamiliar ways.
Different ingredients, product formats, textures and routines offered another way of thinking about dullness, blemishes, hydration and the visible signs of ageing.
What began as a personal search became a fascination with how different skincare cultures could approach the same problem from different directions.

One discovery
led to another.
Exploring Korean skincare introduced another perspective: sophisticated product formats, an emphasis on layering and hydration, and continually evolving approaches to brightness, texture and a refined-looking complexion.
The goal was never to copy a particular market. It was to understand what could be learned from different approaches.

a reason to exist.
Skincare should not require a chemistry degree to understand.
We want to create formulas with a clear purpose — and explain why they are formulated the way they are. What the important ingredients are. What they are intended to do. And, just as importantly, what can and cannot reasonably be claimed about them.

Our focus is cutting-edge, innovative skincare: remaining open to new ingredients, technologies and approaches emerging around the world while applying them with purpose.
In the longer term, that philosophy may extend selectively beyond topical skincare, including a small number of specially formulated supplements where we believe there is genuine scope to do something different.
