We approach skincare as a formulation problem — not a list of fashionable ingredients. The identity, concentration, stability, compatibility and delivery environment of an ingredient can all matter to how a finished formula performs.
OUR APPROACH
A cosmetic formula is a system. We consider what an ingredient is intended to do, how it behaves in the formulation, and whether the claims made for it are proportionate to the evidence.
We look beyond ingredient popularity and consider the relevance and quality of available evidence.
Each formula should have a clear role. Ingredients are selected to support that purpose rather than simply lengthen an INCI list.
Evidence for an ingredient is not automatically evidence for every finished product containing it. We keep that distinction in view.
FORMULATION MATTERS
Active ingredients do not exist in isolation. Vehicle composition can influence solubility, stability, release and delivery. pH, emulsifier systems, texture and supporting ingredients can also affect the behaviour and quality of a topical formulation.
HOW WE THINK ABOUT INGREDIENTS
Rather than asking whether an ingredient is simply “good” or “bad”, a useful formulation assessment asks a series of more specific questions.
Its identity, function and intended role in the formula.
Whether evidence is mechanistic, laboratory-based, ingredient-specific or based on finished-product testing.
Concentration, vehicle, application conditions and the population studied can affect how useful evidence is.
Supporting ingredients, stability and compatibility matter alongside the headline active.
